Gastroenterology & Endoscopy

About

I am a New Zealand trained gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist. Upon completing my training in Auckland, Hamilton and Hawkes Bay, I spent two years in Toronto, Canada at the prestigious St Michael's Hospital where I completed two fellowships focusing on advanced therapeutic endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease.

I returned to Auckland in 2023 to take up a public appointment as a gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist at Te Whatu Ora - Waitemata. I have published in international peer-reviewed journals as well as presented at large international conferences.

I have extensive experience in all aspects of gastroenterology and endoscopy. I provide in-depth consultations at Waitemata Gastroenterology in Takapuna, North Shore and Henderson, West Auckland, to help with your management, as well as endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy, colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound) at Waitemata Endoscopy North Harbour and Henderson, West Auckland.

Appointments are available at short notice.

I am a Southern Cross affiliated provider.

Services

I specialise in a range of gastrointestinal conditions including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), peptic disorders, colon cancer screening, as well as liver, pancreatic and biliary disorders. I am an experienced general and therapeutic endoscopist with a subspecialty interest in lesion assessment and resection as well as hepatobiliary procedures including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound.

  • Consultations

A thorough consultation helps to better understand your background, symptoms and concerns, which allows me to develop a safe, effective and personalised investigation and treatment plan.

  • Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a safe and effective examination of the large bowel (colon and rectum) using a flexible high-definition camera, with the abilty to take biopsies (samples), remove polyps and manage haemorrhoids.

Symptoms that can be investigated include rectal bleeding or visible blood within the stool, a change in bowel habit and abdominal pain, cramping or urgency of bowel motions. Colonoscopy is also recommended in patients with a personal history of polyps, a family history colorectal cancer, positive faecal occult blood testing, as well as investigating causes of anemia.

  • Gastroscopy (Endoscopy)

Gastroscopy is a safe and effective examination of your oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and duodenum (first portion of your small bowel) using a high-definition flexible camera, with the ability to take biopsies (samples) and treat many conditions.

Symptoms that can be investigated include vomiting, indigestion or heartburn, swallowing difficulties and abdominal pain, as well as assessment of celiac disease, anemia or upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound

Endoscopic ultrasound is an advanced procedure that involves a flexible camera with an ultrasound probe built into the tip. It is used to examine parts of the upper GI tract (oesophagus, stomach and small bowel wall, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and biliary tree) with the ability to take samples.

Experience

I completed my medical training at the University of Auckland, School of Medicine, graduating in 2014 (MBChB). I completed my physician training in the Auckland, Hawkes Bay and Waikato regions. I was awarded fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2021 (FRACP).

During my New Zealand based training, I completed a six month fellowship as a Clinical Medical Education Fellow, focusing on clinical education and examination of medical students at the School of Medicine. I also completed a 12 month endoscopy fellowship at Waikato Base Hospital.

After completing my New Zealand based training, I was accepted into the prestigious St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Fellowship Program. As a world center of excellence, I was able to learn from renowned experts in advanced endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease.

I developed experience in advanced, minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to help manage many gastrointestinal conditions, as well as in-depth experience in managing complex inflammatory bowel diseases with newer biologic agents.

In combination with my New Zealand based training, I am able to provide expertise and assistance in managing your gastrointestinal (gut) health.
